A Test Can Reveal What You Can’t Always Feel!

A periodic health examination means going to your family doctor for a routine physical examination and laboratory tests based on age and specific risk factors for the individual patient. A number of diseases have no signs or symptoms until it is too late, and only a detailed history and physical examination - and sometimes laboratory tests - will reveal the presence of these diseases.

Certain diseases are treatable if discovered in the early stages, while left untreated, they can become incurable. One of the main functions of a periodic health examination is identifying risk factors for such diseases, performing the appropriate laboratory tests and then taking steps to address these risks. The American Academy of Family Physicians has made some specific recommendations for certain groups of people.

Here are a few examples of what they recommend:

  • they strongly recommend all women younger than 25 years of age be screened for Chlamydia (a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a tiny bacterium, Chlamydia trachomais, which undetected, can lead to infertility) they strongly recommend everyone over the age 50 be screened for colorectal cancer (a cancer originating in the colon or rectum).
  • they strongly recommend all adults over the age of 18 be screened for hyper-tension by the family doctor.
  • they strongly recommend all women over the age of 40 take a mammogram every one to two years to evaluate breast cancer, after counseling by their family doctor regarding the benefits of carrying out this procedure.

Their other recommendations are available on their website, at http://www.aafp.org/x7661.xmlIf you have not seen your doctor for a while, maybe it is time to make an appointment for a periodic health examination, ensuring that you continue to be in good health!
