Influenza

  • is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses
  • can cause a mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?price-sign.gif

Anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can be vaccinated. However, certain people who are at high risk of having serious flu-related complications should get vaccinated every year, these include:

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends all of us who are living and travelling in areas threatened by H5N1 (avian influenza)
  • Children* aged between 6 months and 5 years
  • Pregnant women (after 14 weeks of pregnancy)
  • People 50 years of age and older
  • People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (asthma, diabetes, renal dysfunction, chronic lung and heart diseases, immunocompromised state, Chronic aspirin
  • Anyone taking care of children (under the age of 5 years) or persons at high risk for complications from the flu (i.e.: parents, nannies, teachers, out of home caregivers etc)
  • Healthcare workers

*Children aged 6 months until 9 years old require the vaccination in two doses if they haven't been vaccinated before.

Who Should Not Be Vaccinated?

  • Some people should not be vaccinated without first consulting a physician, they include:
  • People who have had a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination in the past, or have a severe allergy to eggs.
  • People who have developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) within 6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine previously.
  • Children less than 6 months of age (influenza vaccine is not approved for use in this age group)
  • People who have a moderate or severe illness with a fever should wait to get vaccinated until their symptoms lessen.
